The Best Plants to Grow for Backyard Privacy

Privacy is something we all desire, but it’s not always easy to find. We often turn to high fences in order to achieve the peace and seclusion that many of us crave. However, there are other ways to get privacy for your backyard without resorting to building a fence! In this blog post, I am going to share with you 10 plants that can give you privacy in your backyard.

Hicks Yew

If you’re looking for a privacy screen or live fence, then I would recommend yew. This option is low-maintenance and sets a wonderful backdrop in your yard. Its soft needles make it popular with backyard wildlife all year round!

Boxwood

Boxwood is a great choice for those of you who want to have privacy in your backyard. Boxwoods will grow well in shaded areas and they are tough, so they can withstand pruning as needed.

If you’re looking for something with height, boxwoods should provide enough coverage – the taller varieties measure up to 12′. The only downside? They need more care than some other plants on this list. They require regular watering and fertilizing as fertilizer needs differ depending on which variety you choose!

Chocolate vine

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance plant, the chocolate vine is your best bet. This fast-growing groundcover will cover up any gaping holes in your fence and has variegated leaves that provide color all year long!

Chocolate vines also do well with neglect – they can survive without regular watering because of their deep root system.

This fast-growing evergreen shrub features beautiful white flowers that bloom during springtime.

The only other disadvantage? Once it grows too big, its roots will be tough to remove from wherever they’ve grown into!

Bamboo

Despite bamboo’s reputation as a plant that grows uncontrollably and invades gardens without warning, it offers some of the best privacy protection for your backyard.

This is because bamboo has very rapid growth rates; it stretches upwards to 20 feet tall within just a few years and can easily grow taller than any nosy neighbors peering over your fence.

The downside? You may need something more substantial if you want to put up with relentless pruning (to keep foliage from obstructing views).

Skip laurel

Skip laurels are a great choice for hedges that have to be trimmed on regularly. These smaller plants grow about 10-18 feet and can provide you with beautiful, vase-shaped hedging in no time! Skip Laurel’s foliage is glossy green all year long along with fragrant white blossoms when it comes into bloom around springtime. In fall or winter, these trees produce red berries which not only attract songbirds but also make them lovely holiday decorations as well!

Privet

Privets are popular for their attractive, dense foliage and sweet-smelling flowers. Privets come in different varieties. If you plan to grow privet as a hedge, it needs regular pruning. It may not sound like much fun but this getting-your-hands dirty process pays off because the plant grows between two and three feet each year!

Privet hedges can last for over 30 years. They grow best in full sun to partial shade locations but will tolerate light snowfall during winter.

Holly is also great if you’ve got small children who might get spooked by the plant’s signature sharp leaves – most of our plants are soft-leafed instead with no prickles at all.

The bright and cheerful branches create an attractive thicket of vibrant colors in fall. It prefers wet conditions as well; great for wildlife enthusiasts who want to enjoy nature year-round without compromising on beauty or convenience.

Euonymus has fast-growing rooted branches that can grow about four feet tall each season, so be prepared to trim them annually if you want to maintain an enclosed space between trees. With minimal maintenance, these plants will flourish indoors as well!

Arborvitae

Why might arborvitae be perfect for you?

Arborvitae trees are a great choice if you want to cover up your yard with beautiful, evergreen leaves. Arborvitae bushes also tolerate most soil conditions and they can grow in almost any type of space. The only thing that these plants don’t do well on their own is handling heavy snow or ice accumulation so make sure before planting them somewhere you know it won’t get too much frost!

Bonus tip

By using a great quality fertilizer your shrubs will look amazing. The perfect time to fertilize is fall, when the trees are hibernating and their leaves have died off. Another suitable time is right before growth begins in early spring (from March until May) so that you don’t disrupt the tree’s natural cycle of growing new leaves!
