You know those types of days when your child refuses to eat certain foods? The “I don’t want to eat XYZ anymore!” days. If you’ve raised (or are raising one at the moment) a child, you know what I’m talking about.
There’s a well-known secret for all the moms out there; when your youngster doesn’t cooperate at the dining table – blend it up with something nice to mask it. Your kids won’t notice it, and they will enjoy the tasty bite without realizing there’s something inside.
Both Barb and I have tried it a thousand times and it works, regardless of your children age (Barbara’s boys are way older then my kids, yet they fall for this trick).
Just don’t make a beginner’s mistake and tell them that that vegetable was inside the tasty snack they just had. They will remember and it won’t work again.
You might wonder – Why am I telling you this?
Well, for some reason, my daughter decided she won’t take garlic anymore in her life. I don’t know what happened or what she saw that made her pronounce that statement, but she refused to have any contact with garlic anymore.
(Later on, we’ve found out what was the reason for this – you won’t believe it)
Being a thoughtful and caring mom, I’ve tried to investigate the situation, but to no avail. Jessica just wouldn’t have it. She was not allergic to anything prior to this event, nor she ever had a situation like this before, so the sudden allergy discovery is off the mark.
Enter the Spread Magic.
The trick I’ve developed over time (I mean my variation of “blend it” thing) is to make a spread and put it on a finely baked piece of bread. My girl simply can’t have enough of fine spreads, and we’ve set a (sort of) family tradition – when the dad and his boy are out, girls enjoy fine spreads!
And today, I’m showcasing the one which (you’ve guessed it), has garlic in it.

What do you think did my daughter want to eat this one?
I’ve used an easy spread combination and spiced it up with minced garlic to get the fabulous mix and I used a homemade wide baguette, which turned out fantastic.
Imagine the combo: freshly baked bread, tough cheesy spread with crunchy texture & mildly sour note, combining for a fabulous aroma.
Eating these small yet incredibly tasty snacks brings the family together; the precious moments with her bring joy to my life, and the happiness we share tasting a good bite is priceless to me.
When she tasted these, Jessica was thrilled. She couldn’t realize that the spread contained garlic, lol. When I finally couldn’t hold the secret anymore, I brought her attention to this little fact. Here’s what happened:
- “Honey, could you please tell me why you decided not to eat garlic anymore?”
She looked at me with a bit of shyness and said to me:
- “I got embarrassed in school, Mom. I had a smelly breath the other day. The girls made a fun of me, at the moment Mike (her crush) was passing through the hall. I’ve felt so bad and ashamed because I thought the garlicky breath was the reason.”
Oh, my silly, silly girl.
Here’s what you’ll need for this spread
- Soft sour cheese – 300 gr
- Walnuts – 20 gr
- Hazelnuts – 20 gr
- Basil – 1 tbsp
- Garlic – 2 cloves
- Hot cayenne pepper – 3/4 tbsp
- Salt – 3/4 tbsp
Here’s how to prepare it
- Fry all the nuts in a pan on the mild heat for 10 minutes, so they can get crunchy and tasty.
- Grind the nuts
- Cut the garlic to small chunks and combine with basil
- Put the cheese into the bowl, and combine with all the other ingredients. Mix well.
- Set it to cool off a bit, and prepare (or get) your favorite baguette. The spread is good for this usage, or as a dip for small snacks.
