No, my family didn’t go vegan. I’m pretty sure John will never give up his barbecue ribs – at least not willingly. However, for the past couple of months, I tried my best to incorporate as many vegan meals as I possibly could without anyone complaining.
My first step? Switching to an entirely vegan breakfast.
And what’s breakfast without cereals, right?

The first step to finding the perfect vegan cereals is knowing how to recognize the best vegan cereals, right?
I’m sure the more “experienced” vegans appreciate the variety of options available. Those of you that have no clue what to look for might find it a bit overwhelming, though.
So, let me help you! I already did my research, and, as always, I’m willing to share my findings with you. 🙂
1. Always Go For Whole Grain Cereals
As you’ve probably heard by now, a diet that includes whole grains has been linked to numerous health benefits, including a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. That’s because whole grains are full of precious nutrients, such as fibers, proteins, antioxidants, vitamins, as well as trace minerals.
It doesn’t even matter what type of whole grain it is – everything counts. So, the first thing you should do is check if the ingredients list contains whole grains.
2. Make Sure It’s Full Of Fiber

That wouldn’t be much of an issue if vitamin D didn’t come in two forms, of which only one – vitamin D2 – is 100 percent vegan-friendly.
Vitamin D3, on the other hand, might come from either lichen (which makes it suitable for vegans) or from lanolin (which comes from sheep’s wool and isn’t vegan-friendly at all).
The box usually doesn’t contain any information about the vitamin D3’s source. But, there are some things you can do to ensure that the cereals you’re buying are, in fact, vegan:
Look for the word “vegan” anywhere on the box – food manufacturers will usually include it on the packaging to spare you from having to read all the nutritional information.
Another solution is to call the brand’s customer service and ask them. They should be able to provide all the info you need about the source of vitamin D3 in their cereals.
If you’re genuinely committed to going vegan, check your labels twice. Better safe than sorry, right?

The first question I got when these arrived was:
– Mom, what are we going to do with 10 pounds of cereals?
But the next day, when we all had the chance to try this delicious mix of whole grains, fruit, and nuts for the first time, we quickly realized why these come in such large packages – because you won’t be able to get enough of them! My boys decided to switch their afternoon snack for the muesli – they eat it right out of the bag.
I was worried about the cereal turning soggy when I add milk, but, to my surprise, even after soaking in milk for quite some time (I used skimmed milk at the time, but have since switched to almond milk), the cereals still kept their crunch. Yum!
The only issue – and it’s a minor one, pointed out to me by John – is that there seem to be too many sunflower seeds in the mix. My boys said the same about the dates. I didn’t notice that, though, so it may be more a matter of personal preference than the actual problem with the ingredients.

When I first introduced almond milk into our household, it did take some time for John and the boys to get used to it, but I have to say that this vegan cereals helped the transition a lot. The subtle taste of vanilla and almond complemented the plant-based milk so perfectly.
Of course, that’s not the only reason why I’m recommending this product as one of the finest vegan cereals on the market. I like the fact that these are all non-GMO ingredients, and they are whole grain, as well. It doesn’t get much healthier than that.
The serving is a 3/4 cup, which seems like a small portion, but surprisingly, thanks to the fiber and protein content, it’s more than enough to keep you feeling full throughout the morning.

I decided to include the Navitas Organics Cacao Nibs in my round-up. Why? Because eating a healthy diet doesn’t have to be boring – adding a bit of cacao now and then is perfectly fine.
As you can already guess by now, this is not your typical vegan cereal. The cacao nibs serve as an addition to your cereals, smoothies, or even baked goods. They’ll add an intense cacao flavor without compromising your healthy diet because they have such a low sugar content level – 1 gram per serving.
I also appreciate the fact that the product is organic and non-GMO – as I’m sure every mom that wants only the best for her kids will, too – on top of being vegan-friendly and Kosher.
The main issue here, especially when it comes to vegan diets, is that these Navitas cacao nibs don’t contain any protein. The best way to combat that would probably be to add some protein powder into the mix while you’re making breakfast.
Also, I have to mention the weird smell. It’s something you’re going to notice right out of the box, but luckily for you, it’s just a smell – the taste is still divine.

This one is for vegans with a bit of a sweet tooth, that like their breakfast to taste more like dessert while still being as healthy as possible. First off, the ingredients are all USDA organic, non-GMO, and you know that’s always a huge plus in my book.
Also, and this is particularly important for vegans, they have a high protein content of 7 grams per serving. The cereal includes whole-grain ingredients, so you don’t have to worry about your fiber intake, either.
The greatest thing about these Nature’s Path cereals is that you can genuinely taste the maple syrup in them. You know, as well as I do, that a lot of times there are artificial flavorings added into our food, so I thought it would be the same with these cereals. Imagine my surprise when I opened the first bag and smelled maple syrup almost instantly!
However, they are a bit too sugary for my taste. I think it’s the combination of maple syrup and added sugars that make them almost overwhelmingly sweet. But if you have a bit of a sweet tooth, you’re going to love these.

Well, I was talking from personal experience – I bought these because I read they were vegan. Imagine my surprise when I saw honey on the ingredients list. I guess you do learn from your mistakes.
Since my family didn’t transition to an entirely vegan diet, we were okay with the whole “almost” vegan thing, and my boys loved this cereal. If you’re 100% vegan, though, you should probably move on to the next product. Sorry.
I’m glad I picked them, actually, because of their low sugar, high protein content. Every serving contains 12 grams of protein, and only 3 grams of sugar, which is fantastic.
One major issue I had with these is that they’re advertised as vegan-friendly. I don’t think vegans would be okay with eating honey, though. It counts as an animal product, and, as such, its use is frowned upon in the vegan community.
Also, the cereal doesn’t contain any whole grains, which kind of ruins the idea of a healthy breakfast – for me, at least.
