Best Convection Microwave Oven2
Somehow my boys always come to the kitchen around lunchtime, already hungry (even though they ate less than two hours ago).
They make it hard for me to move around the kitchen, but they love to watch me prepare food for them. However, with them and all the kitchen utensils I have laying around, I am left with barely any space.
That’s when my hero called a convection microwave oven comes and saves the day. They are a godsend for multi-taskers and people who struggle with a lack of space. They are also handy for a studio apartment, caravan or holiday home, or generally wherever a standard oven wouldn’t fit.
Even though I tried a couple of these, I am now on the search for the best convection microwave oven on the market, and I’m asking you to come along.
What is a convection microwave oven and why is it so good?
Naturally, if you are already looking for the best convection microwave oven (also known as combination ovens), then you know what these babies can do.
A convection microwave oven is a kitchen appliance that combines 2 appliances – a convection oven and a microwave, into one.
They usually look quite the same as your regular microwave, but there are some exceptions if you are looking for a large one.
In most cases, a convection microwave oven performs both functions at the same time, so you can avoid having a dish that is hot on the outside but on the inside is cold and undercooked.
However, since they have a dual-use, it usually pays off to replace your regular microwave with a convection microwave oven. This way, you could cook, bake, and microwave things, but also save money.
The 3 Types of Convection Microwave Ovens
- Countertop Convection Microwave – the classic model that we are already used to. Most people have a microwave on the counter anyway, so it would be easy to find space for a new one. These models allow you to simply plug in and out and get things going right away. Of course, the bad part is that they take up space on the counter, so they limit you space-wise.
- Over The Range Convection Microwave – these models save a lot of space, but they are quite difficult to install, so my guess is that you would have to call a professional to do it for you. However, they are good for kitchens with limited space.
- Built-in Convection Microwave – these are probably the best as they offer large capacity and ensure you won’t use up any space on your counters. Unfortunately, they are also hard to install, and you probably don’t have where to put it unless you already have a convection oven installed. In that case, you may be able to swap out the old for the new one, if it’s the right size.

What to look for in the best convection microwave oven?
These sensors measure the interior humidity of your appliance. This helps prevent overcooking and generally badly cooked food. Therefore this is one the first thing you look for in a convection microwave oven since they make a big difference in how the food ends up tasting.
A turntable enables you to have an even cook and saturation during the cooking process. Every microwave has a turntable, but the ones who have a toggle option are rare. This might be necessary if you plan on cooking bigger dishes (because then you risk the motor that spins the turntable).
The capacity is always an important factor. Even though a convection microwave oven resembles a regular oven, you will probably be cooking larger dishes in it. Therefore, it makes sense to buy a slightly bigger one, so you can fit anything you’d like in it.
Even though microwaves are generally hard and look rock-solid, their physical appearance doesn’t usually translate into the real longevity of the appliance (just like many other electronic devices). You always want your convection microwave to last long, and this is a significant factor for me as well.
Warranty is always a great bonus, but in some cases, I would say it’s essential, typically speaking of electronic kitchen appliances. When we talk about microwaves, you should want to have at least a one-year guarantee, and anything more than that is just a plus.

The Cuisinart microwave oven is a classic countertop oven. It’s exterior is brushed stainless steel with embossed Cuisinart logo and dark tinted glass window. I am really pleased with the look of this oven.
The interior is also stainless steel that doesn’t absorb any odor and is easy to clean – this was probably the easiest one for me to clean.
This convection microwave oven has touchpad controls with LCD, and two convenient defrost functions, but it doesn’t have cooking sensors.
The turntable is a 12-inch glass tray, and it has a toggle option – you can bake or roast with and without microwave function. This means that you can cook larger meals with no worry of the pot being too massive for the turntable’s motor. You would be surprised by how little ovens have this function that seems so essential.
The capacity of this convection microwave oven is satisfying at 1.2-cubic-foot. The oven cavity itself can hold square up to 9×9 and, when you use the rack included, it can hold two pans. I tried this same thing without turning off the turntable, and it wouldn’t work, so keep that in mind when you want to prepare food in this oven.
Unfortunately, the durability and longevity of this unit didn’t receive positive feedback. People claim this convection microwave oven is prone to internal electrical issues and obvious mechanical issues, like the microwave door breaking suddenly.
This microwave does have a limited 3-year warranty, but the company makes it difficult to proceed under a warranty claim. They will fix some of the problems, but only if you ship the unit at your expense, to their address.
- The interior is easy to clean and doesn’t absorb odor
- Turntable toggle
- 3-year warranty
- Complicated warranty procedures
- Not durable
- No cooking sensors
It has a stainless steel front and a black cabinet which might be hard to clean from the inside (at least that was my experience with it).
This microwave oven with convection and grill doesn’t have cooking sensors, but it has nine preset cooking functions and eleven different power levels, just like the previous one.
The turntable is made of high-quality durable glass and it’s removable, but it doesn’t have a toggle option. However, normal functioning is still possible – it’s important to be able to prepare food without the turntable limiting your options.
The capacity of this microwave oven is 1.5 cubic feet, which is more than enough for everyday use and just the right size for large meals.
A bonus for people who have children is the child safety program. The Emerson microwave enables the microwave oven to be ‘locked’ so that children or anyone unfamiliar with it cannot operate it accidentally. I know my sons are all grown up now, but we still have a lot of kids come to our house and want to touch everything! This option saved me many times.
You don’t get a warranty with the purchase of this oven, but you can buy the warranty itself. This is really unfortunate when we take into account that it’s an electronic device.
Unfortunately, the Emerson microwave oven overheats really quickly. I remember once when I cooked some potatoes in it, the exterior was so hot that it was almost too hot to touch.
There are complaints about its longevity. This microwave often seems to stop working out of nowhere. On the other hand, some people say it lasts for years without any trouble, so I guess it’s about whether you will get lucky or not. I wasn’t the lucky one, so I was disappointed with the quality.
- Child safety
- 9 preset programs and 11 power levels
- No warranty
- Prone to malfunctioning
- No turntable toggle option
- No cooking sensors
This Toshiba convection microwave oven is an extremely high-quality product. It’s entirely made of stainless steel, with a black stainless steel exterior and easy to clean steel interior. It also has a digital control panel with an interior LED light. I use this oven almost every day for quite some time now, and I didn’t have any trouble with cleaning or LED lights failing.
This microwave oven has cooking sensors for optimum heating and cooking, as well as 6 presets for popular foods and everyday needs such as defrosting and baking.
Like every microwave, this one has a turntable, but it doesn’t have a toggle option. What stunned me was the fact that the turntable isn’t removable, which might be a great flaw if you want to cook something, but don’t want it to turn (for example, a large pan that can fit inside, but can’t turn). It also includes a grill rack for use in convection mode.
The Toshiba convection microwave oven has a large 1.5 cubic feet capacity, which makes it great for preparing meals, and it can fit a 13×9 pan inside. This microwave oven is larger than it sounds! You can fit a whole turkey in it – I tried it myself, and it was great.
The durability of this device is what I’m ecstatic about. Toshiba is well-known for having good quality products, and it looks like they didn’t disappoint with this microwave oven. I constantly praise the manufacturer for the longevity of this convection microwave oven.
This microwave has a one-year limited warranty, which is the minimum necessary, just in case anything goes wrong. Unfortunately, not many devices show malfunctions after less than a year, so even if you do have some troubles, chances are you won’t be covered by this warranty. The good thing is that the longevity is fantastic, and I didn’t have any malfunctions with this oven so far.
- Cooking sensors
- Durability and quality
- Minimal warranty
- The turntable isn’t removable, doesn’t have a toggle option
As the name suggests, this device has Power Convection technology which combines traditional convection cooking with powerful hot air coming from the top. It distributes the heat thoroughly and cooks up to 20% faster than a standard convection microwave oven. If you are one of those people who are always in a hurry, this might be appealing to you. I was ecstatic about this advantage.
This countertop microwave oven has a black stainless steel exterior and a ceramic enamel interior which is scratch-resistant and very easy to clean, maybe even easier than regular stainless steel.
It has cooking sensors which give you optimally cooked meals every time. There is also a large LED display, and settings and timing are clearly visible for greater cooking convenience.
I really like that the door opens from the top (like a traditional oven). The turntable inside the microwave can’t be turned off, but it can be removed, which is fair enough, considering that you may need the free space.
At 1.1 cubic feet capacity, the Samsung convection microwave oven isn’t big enough for large meals. However, the size is quite decent for everyday use, and you could easily fit a lot of things inside.
You might like the Eco Mode, which conserves energy by turning off the display when you aren’t using the microwave. Conventional microwaves use power to maintain essential functions, even when they are at rest. That’s why Eco Mode is more convenient than simply plugging out the microwave cable, and it also helps your oven last longer.
The durability of this microwave oven is quite good, considering the materials used and the famous manufacturer Samsung, renowned for many high-quality electronic devices. I was satisfied with the overall quality. This product has a 2-year warranty, which at first glance sounds great, but the manufacturer makes it really hard for you to use your warranty.
- Cooking sensors
- Eco Mode
- Power Convection
- Ceramic enamel interior
- No turntable toggle

This microwave oven has an interactive cooking system. With some easy-to-follow instructions, the custom help key is a great way to save time when cooking. It also has 4 convection modes for browning, baking, broiling, and crisping, which is mostly all you need in a convection microwave oven.
The built-in exhaust system is convenient, and it offers different venting options – horizontal, vertical and ductless. There is also an interior light and a 13-inch turntable that doesn’t have a toggle option, and it isn’t removable. This is, for me, a great disadvantage as I had trouble with using up the limited space.
The capacity of this convection microwave oven is 1.1 cubic feet, which isn’t that good, especially taking into consideration that you can’t remove the turntable. On the other hand, if you are in a small apartment or don’t need to cook for the whole family of at least 3-4 people, this size might be sufficient for you.
The longevity of this oven is excellent, and it’s rare to see any part of it malfunctioning. Therefore, as far as durability is concerned, you shouldn’t have any problems with this product.
Another fantastic thing about this microwave oven is that Sharp gives a 10-year warranty on major components! Anything more than a year is quite satisfying, but with ten years, Sharp has really outdone the competition.
- 10-year warranty
- Built-in exhaust system
- Cooking sensors
- Not removable turntable, no toggle option
And the best convection microwave oven is…
The competition was harsh, but the slightest advantages made a big difference in my overall scores for these five convection microwave ovens.
This is why I decided to give this one to the Toshiba Convection Microwave Oven, as it’s the best oven all-around.
I tried my best to include the culinary aspect in this search for the best convection microwave oven, because, after all, that’s why we are here. Toshiba’s oven has some minor flaws, but overall it’s undoubtedly the best combination oven on the market.
If you have any questions or you disagree with my opinion, feel free to contact me, and I will try my best to help you.
Until next time, happy cooking! 😉
